Love not the world! - Reverend Romesh Prakashpalan

Image
"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.." 1 John 2:15-17 In our preparatory service for the Lord's Supper we are called to weigh in the balance our love for the world with our love for Jesus Christ. We are called to examine our love for the world, mortify it, and inflame our love for Jesus Christ as we prepare for the Communion Table. Preached Sabbath PM on 08/29/21 from 1 John 2:15-17. How to Live, and that Well in all Estates and Times, Specially when Helps and Comforts Faile - William Perkins

How to Live, and that Well in all Estates and Times, Specially when Helps and Comforts Faile - William Perkins William Perkins was born in 1558 to Thomas and Hannah Perkins in the village of Marston Jabbett, in Bulkington parish, Warwickshire. As a youth, he indulged in recklessness, profanity, and drunkenness. In 1577, he entered Christs College in Cambridge as a pensioner, suggesting that socially he nearly qualified as gentry. He earned a bachelors degree in 1581 and a masters degree in 1584. While a student, Perkins experienced a powerful conversion that probably began when he overheard a woman in the street chide her naughty child by alluding to drunken Perkins. That incident so humiliated Perkins that he gave up his wicked ways and fled to Christ for salvation. He gave up the study of mathematics and his fascination with black magic and the occult, and took up theology. In time, he joined up with Laurence Chaderton (15361640), who became his personal tutor and lifelong friend. Pe...

Tertullian's Address to the Martyrs

Image
Tertullian's Address to the Martyrs Tertullian is known in church history as the father of Latin theology, as he was the first church leader to write his works in Latin. Most of his writing was in defense of Christianity against persecution from without or heresy from within. He had an enormous influence on the early church, and much of that influence can still be seen today. Born about AD 145 to a Roman centurion in Carthage, Quintis Septimus Florens Tertullianus was trained in Greek and Latin and became a lawyer in Rome, where he was converted to Christianity about AD 185. Though we know very little about the details of his conversion, he said that he could not imagine a truly Christian life without a conscious breach, a radical act of conversion. Prior to his conversion, he indulged in the typical licentiousness of Roman society, including sexual promiscuity and enjoying the games in the arena. He was profoundly affected by the testimonies of Christians who were martyred in the ...

Ebenezer Erskine

Image
Ebenezer Erskine (1680-1754) was a founder of the Secession church. He was born in Dryburgh and was the son of the famous Henry Erskine. Ebenezer and Ralph Erskine were preachers in the 18th century who saw thousands revived and reformed under their ministry. Born at the end of the 17th century, their lives were disrupted by their father Henry's refusal to distance himself from the Covenanters. He was imprisoned for daring to continue his ministry. Poor health led to Henry's sentence being commuted to exile in England, enabling him to continue to preach in the border counties. It was here that God used him to bring a young Thomas Boston to faith.  Both Ralph and Ebenezer were ordained into the Church of Scotland but Ebenezer was only converted after he was ordained. The difference in the effect of his sermons was remarkable. Thousands flocked to hear him from as far as sixty miles away. When he later ministered in Stirling the whole town was affected. Erskine also continued to ...

Believers: Lights in the World - Charles Spurgeon Sermon

Believers: Lights in the World - Charles Spurgeon Sermon Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain. (Philippians 2:14-16)
